Off camera lighting is one of my passions.  I typically use a couple of Vivitar flashes fired via pocket wizards to light my images.  If I’m shooting engagement sessions or formal family portraits at a wedding I’ll set up a light stands, but for bride & groom portraits I always have my second shooter/assistant hold my light off camera.  Most of my lit images are lit with just a single flash.  It’s all about balancing ambient light with the added light from your flash. For reception lighting I use two strobes on lightsands placed in opposite corners of the room, pointing at a 90 degree angle directed at the dance floor.  I also use a speedlite on camera bouncing the light off the ceiling or off the built-in bounce card.  All in all there are three lights contributing to my reception lighting; two off camera and one on camera.
